Two Cocks golf day another big success

Naracoorte Golf Club has again successfully hosted one of the largest social golf days in SA with the annual Two Cocks Golf Day last Friday.

Aspirations to win the beige jacket and secure a hand-etched Magnum of the DiGiorgio Family’s famous Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon is only part of the reason why the day is such an ongoing success.

Fine weather, a Nippy’s Iced Coffee and a Farmer’s Leap stubby holder greeted a mixture of 210 accomplished golfers and golf newcomers. Players anxiously awaited their tee time which was signalled by a shotgun start by Sergeant of Arms Mark Watters of the 3rd Light Horse Regiment – Naracoorte Troop who featured on horseback throughout the day selling tickets for their upcoming film night “Charge of the Light Brigade” at the Naracoorte Town Hall in July.

This year saw some new features on the course including the Border Inn who converted the first tee-block into a makeshift bar from which Beanz Robinson poured butchers of Lion Nathan beer from a refreshingly chilled keg. Staff from Abbott Pathology occupied a stationary bar on the 14th tee where they raised awareness about the benefit of blood testing which can be conducted as part of a men's health check with the doctors at Kincraig Medical Centre.

Players were treated to the usual impressive spread of food and entertainment while completing their round including wine tasting.

Wines were from Farmer’s Leap, DiGiorgio Family Wines and Jim Barry, plus oysters from Bannings Oysters shucked and served by Sherrin Sutcliffe.

They also enjoyed Australia’s best sausages from Shaun Watson at Tender Cuts cooked by SAL Real Estate agents Dennis Overall, Cameron Grundy and Sophie Ford. On the 16th hole, caterer Peter Day perfectly cooked the delicious Teys Bros Scotch fillet steak sandwiches supplied by Crash Downward from Central Meat Distributors and served by Max Williams.

Following the round, an over capacity club house was treated to fine Indian cuisine from Hayden and his staff at Pearl Indian Cuisine in Naracoorte. Players also had an opportunity to “Putt for a Smart TV” sponsored by Michael and Karen Justin of Naracoorte Home & Electrical, a prize ultimately won by Luke Hunyadi.

Throughout the seven hour round the 41 groups spent their time meandering through the promotional material adorning the course from gold sponsors including Carters Foodland, Bricey’s South East Collision Repairs, Naracoorte Toyota, Cox Rural, PPHS, the Handbury Family, Drew’s Workshop Supplies, Murray Nankivell, the Store in North Adelaide, Sinclair Electrical Solutions, MGA InsuranceBrokers, Cappa Motor Bodies, and Mini Jumbuk.

Throughout the long round, players were kept hydrated by the cart girls who were serving a wide variety of Lion Nathan beers. Lion Nathan have been a great sponsor for many years along with Henry Mould and his team at the Naracoorte Hotel who collectively sponsor the prize of two cartons of beer for a nearest the pin on each hole.

Few people could argue that there is a more deserving winner of any golf day than former president and founder of the NGC Sheep Graziers group Michael Schinckel. Schinckel has tirelessly volunteered his time to both the Two Cocks Golf Day and Naracoorte Golf Club over many years and was finally rewarded for his efforts by winning the coveted beige jacket, the hand etched DiGiorgio Magnum and championship caps donated by Stumpy Hunter from Naracoorte Sportspower. His team included David Copping, Simon Robinson, Phil Clark and David Laurie. They started slowly parring their first two par 5s before a sensational stretch of birdies saw their team jump into contention with 61 off the stick for a net 49.5 (the first score less than net 50 since the inception of Two Cocks).

On the 5th tee the local CWA team led by Sophie Watson cooked and served pulled pork burgers and ran a very successful “buy a birdie putt” and raffle for a magnum of Wynns wine and meat tray donated by Darren Turner and Tender Cuts. Further donations will also be made later this year to Legacy and the 3 rd Light Horse Regiment – Naracoorte Troop.

The golf club will also receive funds from the day including the wood raffle sponsored by Peter Westley who managed to win his own prize before surrendering to the pressures to auction his trailer load of wood which raised a further $400.

A successful day like this cannot take place without the help of the multiple sponsors and volunteers who contribute their time and resources into the day. This includes Chris Fry and his team of volunteers who set up the course (and cleaned up the next day), the cart girls led by Margot Vilde who sell drinks on course, the ladies in the kitchen headed up by Bernie Richards who assisted with the feeding of 210 hungry players at the conclusion of their round, those people behind the scenes such as Chris Burford, Sue Hood, Bill Moorhouse, Melville Proud and Roger Pfitzner who spent the day stocking fridges, manning the bar and doing scorecards, Miles Pfitzner, Ronnie Dix and Tom Dennis, Digby Schinckel who conducted the successful auction and PGA professional Garry Simpson who gave his time on the 7th hole.
