Goats training for students

Year 7/8 students at Kangaroo Inn Area School are preparing and training Boer goats to be judged at the Royal Adelaide Show in September.

This experience forms part of the secondary learning program in Agriculture during term 3.

Students Lucy Kellock, Sophie Hurst and Tara Nicolle explained that working with the goats in show preparation is the first step in the secondary Agriculture program at Kangaroo Inn.

Students are able to move onto steer showing in Year 10-12 which is part of the VET- Rural Operations course and SACE Stage 1 and 2 Agricultural Studies.

Tara explained the process of showing the goats: “You need to lead the goats in a ring where they will be judged on the goats’ and handlers’ performance.”

Sophie added: “At the show there is a grand parade with all the animals walking around the main arena.

“The weight of the goat decides on what class they are judged in.

“Similar weights will be judged in the same competition.”

Agriculture teacher at Kangaroo Inn Area School Deb Hunt explained: “At the show the goats are evaluated on their carcass weights which reflects how we feed and care for them and the feed conversion to fat.

“Another part of the competition is the ring craft skills that the kids display with their goats.

“The class are involved in developing these skills in class and at lunchtimes over the term.”

The students will stay in Adelaide for two nights and during their time at the Show, they will focus on ensuring the goats are well presented for the judges, parading them in the grand parade and in the judging and taking turns in looking after them.

After the show the goats are evaluated on their carcase quality and the results shared with the schools.

A team of eight goats and three steers will head to Adelaide to represent Kangaroo Inn Area School.
