ABL baseball teams come to South East

Mount Gambier will become the latest regional centre to host the Brut Australian Baseball League, with a historic pre-Christmas series between the Auckland Tuatara and the Adelaide Bite.

The Round 6 clash will serve as home games for the Tuatara, with local fans tipped to flock to the Blue Lake Sports Park from December 20-23.

Baseball Australia chief executive officer Cam Vale said this history-making series is just the beginning for regional Australia.

“We have made a concerted effort to bring the Australian Baseball League to regional Australia,” Vale said.

“The introduction of Geelong-Korea has been very well received, while this Mount Gambier series is a great example of the passion for baseball across the country.

“This project has been community driven, and we see this as a fantastic opportunity to continue our journey to bring high-level baseball to more regional centres.

“While events like this are significant in their own right, they can equally serve as a catalyst for longer-term projects like annual events, or a potential location for an ABL expansion team.”

The Mount Gambier and District Baseball League will host the Round 6 series, and vice-president Michael Summers is excited to bring international talent to the region.

“This is a sensational coup for our great town,” Summers said.

“We can’t wait to host the Bite and the Tuatara, and show them the best Mount Gambier has to offer.

“There have been exciting changes for the ABL this season, and we are so excited to be a part of history.”

Baseball Australia Chief Operating Officer Ben Foster suggested that Mount Gambier could possibly become the home of a national sports team with the expansion plans of the Australian Baseball League.

“I sat down with the Mount Gambier Council and the local league some weeks ago some weeks ago to discus this possibility and they have both taken it on board with a great deal of enthusiasm.”

“The main diamond at Blue Lake Sports Park is very good and only requires some minor upgrades.”

Auckland play two of their home series in Australia and Mount Gambier has been selected as one of those.

Adelaide have played here previously, and it was Bite CEO Nathan Davison who suggested they return to Mount Gambier for this series of games.

“I remember we had an opportunity to play down there once before and it was fantastic, with the support that came from the locals.”

Hopefully fans of sport and in particular baseball will come from near and far to watch a very high standard of baseball. Two games will be played under lights.
