Wolfsburg missed the chance to go provisionally top of the Bundesliga on Friday (Saturday AEST) despite fighting back to draw 1-1 away to Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Dutch striker Wout Weghorst's smart finish equalised for Wolfsburg in the first half after a brilliant strike from Niko Giesselmann had put Fortuna in front.

Wolfsburg would have gone top with a win but instead must settle for second, one point behind leaders RB Leipzig who host now third-placed champions Bayern Munich on Saturday (Sunday AEST).

"I don't think we can be happy with a point," Weghorst told broadcaster DAZN.

Dusseldorf moved up a place to 11th on goal difference with four points from four games so far.

Friedhelm Funkel's Dusseldorf won their opening match away to Werder Bremen and stopped a run of two defeats despite a limited performance in front of their own fans.

In contrast to Weghorst, the veteran coach was "highly satisfied" with the point.

"That's how I want to see my team. They have fought and fought," he said
